Dammit. Man overboard. It’s really looking like Tom is done. Don’t tell me that it’s over.
But this is really a sad day. If there’s one certainty, it’s that Blink isn’t Blink without Tom DeLonge. It’s the Mark, Tom, and Travis show. I can’t see the band going on without all the members. Whether or not they actually record an album with or without Matt Skiba is yet to be seen. As much as I love Hoppus’ voice and songwriting, combined with the fact that Travis Barker is an A-list drummer, it’ll be hard to hear a swan song without Tom.
Obviously Tom is going to get a lot of hate for this. Maybe he deserves it, maybe he doesn’t. He’s clearly the reason why this is happening, and Blink historians know he’s the reason for the first breakup too. Obviously they haven’t said they’re “breaking up” officially, but I think the writing’s on the wall at this point. I’d still love to see Mark and Travis live, but like I said, Blink isn’t Blink without Tom.
I’ll never lose respect for this guy. “Stay Together For The Kids” and “Flight of Apollo” are two of his many songs between Blink-182 and Angels & Airwaves that I’ll listen to for the rest of my life. But it’s not unfair to say that the way he’s continually shoved Blink aside (and we now know that Mark and Travis have been covering for him the whole time) to work on other projects is completely unfair to the fans, which there are A LOT of. Everyone waited all of 2014 for a new album, and it just never came. And now we know why. You can only lean on me for so long.
I guess Tom just wasn’t feeling this.
Side Note: How bad is it that I practically teared up when this news broke earlier today? There are worse things to get upset about, of course. But like I said, this probably means Blink is over. I’d be upset if Matchbox 20, Foo Fighters, or Weezer broke up too, or the frontman left. (I KNOW THEY HAVE TWO SHUT UP.)
