#4 BU Holds off Northeastern in OT in Another Thrilling Beanpot Final

This game had everything you want in a Beanpot final. Intensity through the roof. Back and fourth momentum. 3rd period comeback. Sudden death OT. Star power on both sides with projected #2 overall pick Jack Eichel on BU and Ducks draft pick Kevin Roy of Northeastern who won MVP of the 2013 Beanpot as a freshman.

Marshfield, Ma native Mike Moran opened the scoring early for Boston University, ripping a wrist shot over Northeastern goalie Clay Witt’s shoulder just 2:19 into the game, only to be answered 28 seconds later by Northeastern’s John Stevens.

BU dominated the Huskies for much of the second, as Bruins draft pick and Charlestown Ma native Matt Grzelcyk tallied a goal and and assist to put the Terriers up 3-1.

Going into the 3rd Northeastern, who has not won a Beanpot since 1988, faced a daunting two point deficit against the Hockey East leading BU Terriers. But the Huskies were able to rally, scoring with two back to back strikes at 9:08 and 10:43 from Kevin Roy and Dustin  Dorou. Both teams continued to trade scoring chances for the remainder of the third period, but the game could not be decided in regulation.

But, less than a minute into OT, Grzelcyk scored his second of the night, securing the Beanpot MVP and BU’s 30th Beanpot final out of 63. BU’s win shatters BC’s four year streak of Beanpot championships, and BU’s banner will hang in the TD garden for the first time since 2009, when the Terriers went on to win the National Championship.
