Chris Martin Played “Raspberry Beret” In Honor Of Prince

The music world lost a legend a week ago.

I feel like some people my age didn’t quite understand how big of a deal Prince was until his unfortunate passing. Top 5 guitarist of all time, absolute musical genius, lava hot tunes, lyrically complex, the works. He had a Beck-on-Morning Phase-like committment to his art, where he’d take the liberty to record something like 20+ instruments for a single album by himself. Simply increbile.

Music’s biggest stars have come out with their own tributes to The Artist Formally Known As “The Artist Formally Known as Prince,” and rightfuly so. Bruce played “Purple Rain” to open his show in Brooklyn…

..and as John posted a few days ago, Noel Gallagher let the crowd do Prince justice.

Now Chris Martin (lead singer of Coldplay, guys. You should know this by now) is added to the list of singer who had awesome tributes to Prince. At a charity concert for pediatric cancer, he and a bunch of kids played “Raspberry Beret,” one of Prince’s best songs. It’s certainly top 5 for me.

I feel like this is the perfect Prince song for Chris to be a part of covering. I can’t see him doing “Purple Rain.” Same with “Let’s Go Crazy,” which is CRIMINALLY underrated. Also, I can’t really picture him singing “When Doves Cry.” Sorta, but not totally.  But “Raspberry Beret” is perfect for Chris. It sounds so cheery, matching his personality, but he’s just so oblivious to the fact that it’s about someone losing their virginity. The raspeberry beret is what she was wearing when you became a man, Chris, and you’re none the wiser when it comes to that.

But all joking aside, awesome move by Chris and a great cover. Those kids, too; they seem pretty talented. Maybe they could open up (and up and up) for Coldplay at Gillette on July 30th?!?!

Maybe. But until then, let’s hope all other Prince tributes we get in the future are at least just as good as the ones we’ve been getting.

Considering it’s a blog involving Prince, obligatory video: maybe the best individual skit ever from the immortal Dave Chappelle Show. NSFW language, so heads up.

Game……blouses.
